Biography

Position and association with the University

Abdulkarim Ayopo Oloyede is  Professor of Wireless Telecommunications University of Ilorin. He is currently the Director Center for Research Development and In-House Training and he was the Head of Department of Telecommunication Science in 2022.

Prof. Abdulkarim Oloyede is a distinguished academic and telecommunications expert with extensive experience in research, teaching, and global consultancy in wireless Telecommunications. He is currently serving as the Ag. Director of Center for Research development and In-House Training at the University of Ilorin and previously led the Department of Telecommunication Science as its Ag. Head. His leadership roles have solidified his reputation as a key figure in telecommunications both in Nigeria and internationally.

Prof. Oloyede represents Nigeria at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and has contributed significantly to global policy discussions on telecommunications, Internet governance and ICT development. His international engagement extends beyond ITU, as he served as a member of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) Advisory Group from 2019 to 2021, where he was involved in shaping global internet governance.

He obtained both his Master’s (2012) and Ph.D. (2015) degrees in Electronic Engineering (Telecommunications) from the prestigious University of York in the UK, where his research focused on spectrum management and cognitive radio, areas that remain central to his academic pursuits. Prof. Oloyede’s B.Engr. in Electrical Engineering is from Bayero University.

In addition to his academic achievements, Prof. Oloyede is a widely traveled scholar, having visited over 70 countries across all five continents, which has further enhanced his global perspective on telecommunications development and policy. His experience spans working with various international organizations, regulatory bodies, and governments, advising on telecommunications frameworks, spectrum allocation, and broadband development for underserved regions.

Since 2017, Prof. Oloyede has served as the Vice Chairman of the ITU Telecommunication Development Advisory Group (TDAG), where he plays a pivotal role in guiding the ITU’s strategic direction for global telecommunications development. His leadership in this role has been instrumental in advancing policies that aim to bridge the digital divide, particularly in developing countries.

Prof. Oloyede is also an active contributor to academic research and has authored numerous publications in journals and conferences, covering topics such as spectrum pricing, path loss prediction, and energy efficiency in wireless networks. His work has had a significant impact on the telecommunications field, particularly in addressing the challenges of providing affordable and efficient broadband connectivity to rural and underserved communities.

He is a respected member of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

With his wealth of experience, leadership, and technical expertise, Dr. Oloyede continues to make significant contributions to both the academic and professional realms of telecommunications, influencing policy, research, and education globally.
